No way, Phil couldn't fill Chuck Rainey's boots.

I think Jerry could have acquitted himself on some of their tunes tho', as well as Billy K.

Donald Fagen would blow Brent and Keith away on piano in my opinion, so no prize for them either.

I don't think so.

Pig did some 'stuff' on the organ, I have not heard him play the piano on any Dead numbers. He may have done, but it wasn't exactly his forte (excuse the pun).

He's not even in the same league as Keith or Brent, never mind Donald Fagen.

that statement was meant as a joke. pig was well suited for the experimental, bluesy, psychedelic, and sometimes sloppy music he played with the early Dead. but pig wouldn't be allowed to sit in with steely dan probably based on looks alone, never mind his very subpar technical skills as a pianist. i honestly can't even see jerry pulling off steely dan. they weren't meant to though, but it's a fun discussion topic nonetheless.

Sorry, I missed the irony in your post. My mistake.

Have a listen to some of Jerry's more jazzier solo stuff e.g. circa Legion Of Mary or Reconstruction.
I think he might have just got by and in my opinion could have certainly given Jeff Baxter a run for his money.

But certainly, he is no Larry Carlton or Jon Herington.

One things for sure though, the Dead's vocal abilities would never have cut it.
